The time was around June 2000. It was the first time I travel to the US. I’m still a stranger in the country, for I was only 3 months in the US. I was talking to a friend in a diner while drinking coffee in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.. We were discussing about cultural topic when the term ‘southern comfort’ was brought to the surface. My friend explains more about the term.
One thing I’m confused was that, although according to his explanation that it’s a cultural quality carried by people who live in the southern state of US, I had never found such quality in the city of Atlanta. He laughed at my comment, and said that even though Atlanta is in the south, I have to travel a little bit out of city to find such quality. Finally, he offers me to travel to North Carolina with him. As we entered the city of Asheville, I asked him about the hotel we were going to stay in, but get a laugh as a reply. Finally, we arrived at the Lion and the Rose Inn, a large house a little bit outside the city.
It was one of Asheville inn with large yard and antique ornament around the building. It sure feels cozy to walk into the room and sat on the big armchair. A big glass of iced tea served for us as a welcome drink. But the true experience came during the dinner. A complete set of southern dinner, including fried chicken, sweet corn bread, gravy and smoked beef spoil our appetite, and left me lying down on my bed, drifting to sleep.
Hospitality and friendliness are wasted in this Asheville inn. Two days seemed too early for us to leave. It’s a true satisfying experience of Southern Comfort.
